Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever a thread holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.

He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Discovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
