Safety Advice for Defence Staff
During a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister said that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a issue in every modern vehicles.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
